Yes you would require a transit visa for germany as you have a B1 for the US. If you were holding a green card then it was not required.

You may want to check on this because, my parents trasited through Frankfurt with a B2 visa and I know that they have not taken any transit visa for Germany. This was in August 2004.

If the visa on your Passport has not expired, then you don't need a transit visa.

Rules have changed; just enquired from the consulate -- Airport transit visa is required if you are not permanent resident or a citizen.

Transit Visa for Frankfurt- Update!

I received the following communication from the German Consulate in Chennai that talks about the current rules regarding the Transit visa requirement for Franfurt Airport.

Indian nationals unfortunately require a transit visa for Germany, but passengers, who are holding a valid EU, US or CAN visa and who are transiting through Frankfurt airport without leaving the international transit area, will be issued a visa upon arrival by the competent Authorities there.

I hope this regulation meets your requirements and does not cause delay or further obstacles to your trip via Frankfurt airport.

Thanks for the info.

I had written to the German Consulate in Chennai and they responded differently; with the new rule they mentioned we need to have a transit visa. Finally we got one.

AT this point I would assume it is individual's decision how they want to approach this Transit Visa issue.

In my case I am standing by what I heard from the Chennai Consulate and I have advised my in-laws (who got their visitor's visa today) not to bother with this in India. They also got the secondary confirmation from the Travel agent in India that they will not need to get the Transit visa in India.
