transfer of h1b visa after merger

My company is being taken over by another company this month. Does anybody have any idea about when I must ask them to apply for a visa transfer to the new company. Let\'s say that they apply just as the merger becomes effective, am i allowed to travel outside the country during this transfer process? Please let me know. thanks
