Tourist Visa Holder period of time stay questions!

Hi,
My parents have a 10 year multiple entry visitor visa.
I am a H1-B visa holder.

I have a couple of questions here:

1 - I am aware that tourist visa holders can stay for 6 months at a stretch before they leave the US.
However, can they leave the US to go to Canada for a week and then re-enter the US again?
For example: if they stayed in the US from May 2006 through Oct end 2006. They then go to Canada for a week in Oct/Nov 2006 and re-enter the US in Nov 2006 -- staying on for another 6 months and so on.

2 - Are there any stipulations on the maximum number of days in a year that a tourist visa holder can stay.

3 - Are there any stipulations that they have to go back to the country they came from (say India), before they can attempt to come to the US again? Could they just visit Canada and then come back into the US?

4 - Can their immigration status be changed to H4 (dependant of H1)?

Thanks for any input and pointers!

If people stay more than 180 days per annum on B visas, immigration officials start getting somewhat unpleasant at port of entry.

Possibility of deportation is high. Im not saying it will happen, it just means that it is likely to happen.

The B visa is not a residence visa. The DHS doesnt like it when people abuse it to turn it into one.

There is no requirement that you return to your country of origin in order to return to the United States.

But im going to reiterate this.

If the border control agent finds that youre spending more time in America than outside, chances are that youll be denied entry and your visa cancelled, unless you can provide a really really good reason for your actions.

Parents can not get H4 visa. Only spouse and children can get a H4.

If there is a good reason, you will be able to extend visitor visa once by anothe six months maximum. You can do this from here.. They do not need to leave the country. But I don't think it is a good idea, especially if they are planning to visit you again in the future. They may have to go through interview at POE.
