Tourist VISA extension - Good & Bad

My parents have 10 yrs multiple entry VISA. But, when they entered the USA this time on Dec 16th, 2001, they were given I-94 for just three months. I want them here for atleast 6 months. What is the procedure?.

* I heard that if they applied for an extension, then they will not be given I-94 the next time they visit USA. Is it right?.
* What reason can they give for an extension?.
* When should they apply for extension?.
* Or Can they go to Mexico / Canada & get a new I-94. In that case, what will the reason for their visit to Mexico / Canada be?.
* Or do you have any good suggestions, Please help me.

Thanks in advance.

They can file Form I-539 to extend their stay for additional 3 or 6 months. They can indicate any reason, like "would like to travel" or "would like to spend more time with children/grandchildren", and so on. The application should be submitted while current I-94 is still valid, and they can stay until INS adjudicates the petition, but no longer than 180 days after expiration of current I-94 if INS fails to adjudicate within 180 days, to avoid 3/10 year bar. They can also travel to Mexico/Canada (you pick the reason) and reenter with new I-94, but they don\'t have to do it. There should be no negative consequences in the future if they apply for extension.
