To use or not to use a Lawyer?

Hi,

I plan to file for us citizenship in a few months.
I have always had an immigration lawyer file all my papers up to this point (for past 13 years). My company moved me from Arizona to Washington last year, now my lawyer can't file for me since I'm out of state.

Do most of you guys file all your own N400s or do you have a lawyer do it?

I'm kinda nervous filing it on my own. My lawyer was really good and saved my butt more than a few times when INS messed up my paper work and mistakenly sent me deportation letter a few days after sending the approval of my green card

So I'm wondering what % of people here file N400 on their own.

Good idea of reviewing the paper work. I'll probably do that.

I have never been out of status, never had any law related problems (except 2 speeding tickes about 10 years ago). All my INS papers are in order.

Thanks,
Norm

In my opinion, the N-400 application is a simple and straight forward process unless your case is complicated.......I did it myself without any sweat. If I have to do it over, I will do it myself. My suggestion would be to do it yourself.

I had a friend who did not use an attorney to file N-400. INS lost his fingerprint letter and sent him a letter after 6 months of filing that he abandoned his application. Next time, he used an attorney, all his notices and correspondance from INS came on time. Another, benefit of using an attorney is that the mailing notices go both to you and to attorney's office. So incase one gets lost, there is a good chance that the other will make it. Also, in the worst case if both gets lost, an attorney can argue thru' proper channels to appropriate people with USCIS. My recommendation is to always use an attorney.

I think law permits an attorney to represent anybody anywhere in the USA by telephone. So if your attorney is very good and knowledgeable, he/she should know about this law. You might want to talk to your attorney about this. But if you really want somebody from your new local area, that is a different thing. Hope this info helps.
