bir999:

After reading your post, I am curious to know a few things from you and others who are in similar position like you.

1) Why residency and practice is stressful? Especially when compared to India?

Is residency stressful because it involves exams at the end and you have to read more books? Why practice is tough thereafter? I know if you are a surgeon etc, professions which involves operations, it might be stressful, as they have to do the operations with care. And also they have to care about patients life and they might get sued if something goes wrong?

Other than this, if the doctor is a internist or something, whose profession doesn't involve any operations, all they have to do is diagnose and suggest medicines, right? As long as you do OP, what is there to worry about? How different what you do from others (IT guys) do? What about dentist? Is it not a cool job?

2) Second, how long you have to work is determined by whom? Is the hospital management who employs you? Didn't you have any freedom to choose how long and when and where you can work? Can't you practice self?

3) You are working in a small town, is it because in other places it is tough to find a job?

4) Can't you quit for some time if you want to? How easy to get a next job, I mean compared to IT guys, who are suffering a lot without any jobs?

5) When you choose to go through medical profession, don't you know how these things will be?

6) Is it always the more a person busy means, they are making more money? Does your pay depends on number of hours you worked?

7) Finally, the most important thing I want to ask is, you and your wife continuing all this, just because there is no other alternative. I mean you might be both earning a lot of money and might have saved enough money to live royally in India for the rest of your lives. Then still how long you are both decided to suffer like this? I mean you both know how much pain it will be, but still continuing why?

Thanks in advance. Just curious, nothing else. Like to know your and others thoughts.

Just want to tell you on thing, last month I went to a dermatologist. Just for three minutes, he charged my insurance company $370, out of which I have to pay $140 from my pocket. This simple incident reminds how pathetic the health system here in USA.

Led, this could be a issue with the kind of insurance. I recently was referred to a dermatologist, and I only had to pay $15 as co-payment. You might want to check with your insurance company on this.
