To apply or not to apply

i am in a dillemma and need suggestions, Please.

I filed for GC and got approved in 2002 and now i have the real one that last for ten years. It is based on marriage and i am still married to the same woman who is a citizen by birth. She encourages me to apply for citisenship but i cannot decide for my past history of Multiple DWIs and Drunk In publics. All these incidents happened between 94 and 97, and i was pretty nervous during my GC application, but it came through and everything fine and dandy.

Now the question is should i apply for citizenship?. I know lawyers are the ones who have answers in cases like mine, but if i don't have a strong case, lawyers do'nt make a difference.

If i will be in trouble by applying for citizenship , then i am just happy with my GC.

What you all think?

Thanks in advance

I think that you should give it a shot and try to apply. i don't think you would get deported , the most could happen is denial of ur application.I am not a laywer but that's my personal opinion. Also, the basis for the denial ( if so) could be the lack of a moral character, this is nothing really serious to get you deported, just enough to deny the application. Good luck

Like Sony55 wrote, you got nothing to lose by trying.

Further, since you were not deied the GC why are you worried at all. Remember, while they do consider all your history, the focus is your behavior in the last three years (you are married to a US citizen), and since the last time you were in trouble was more than 8 years ago, I think there are high chancces you will have no problem.
For peace of mind you might consult a lawyer. I wouldn't.

I highly recommend an attorney! apply for cz but after speaking with a good lawyer

Rahul, do you think he has anything to lose (except, of course, application fees) by applying?

Yes. He is affecting any future chances of citizenship by applying and getting denied(if it happens). I am not very optimistic about multiple dui's and multiple pulblic intoxication charges/convictions being on your record. They have denied CZ due to simple misdemeanor petty theft incidents that happened 20 years ago!

Applying with an atty at your side may make the difference between CZ and no CZ. I suggest dont apply without speaking with an atty.

Thanks a lot for all of your replies. I myself agree with Rahul, and i am going to consult the same attorney that i had when i applied for GC before applying.

So i was not wrong when i said i have qualms about applying. I know i have changed my lifestyle and bettered my surroundings and have not gotten in trouble and will not either.

But my mere applying may get me in trouble is what i am worried about. Why knowingly come into harm's way when i am all happy with GC. the only thing is i cannot vote or become a president or be on Jury duty.

First, I don't want to become the president, period. That is too much of a headache and i am not a polictician. Second, I don't want to vote cause all the polticians are the same- they say somehting during election and do something different after being elected. Third, I don't want to decide someone else's fate, when my fate is not certain.

So be it. I have a GC that is renewable in 10 years.

Thank you all

chackman,

Please do not worry yourself at all about being a president. You can never be one (even if you get naturalized) unless they ammend the constitution (for Arnold)

The president must be a US citizen BY BIRTH, and must have been in the US for over 14 years andmust be 35 years at all.

Apparently, you should not apply right now for CZ, you first need to learn the material... :D

"the only thing is i cannot vote or become a president or be on Jury duty. "

This is what I wrote above. Now you decide if i knew the requirements to be the president , or not.

:)

chakman, Actually, people like me apply for citizenship for totally different benefits. I am not looking forward to be president, as mentioned above we wouldn't be presidents. We are looking at benefits such as the American Passport for freedom of travel, petitions filing for relatives, and on top of that , applying to get Federal Government Jobs!
I think that is worth working hard for, don't you think?!!

It is very unfortunate to see that you guys are miscontruing what i have said about not being able to become a president.
Please read my post again and feel the sarcasm or humor or joke or whatever you like to call it, if you can. that is my way of doing the same.

i was referring to three things a GC holder cannot do.Becoming the president is one more step beyond even for a naturalized citizen. Do I know these facts , Hell yeah, I do. A third grader can read from top to bottom of this forum and answer many immigration related questions.

You know something does not mean others know nothing. Even better, you don't need to look down upon others to look good, Let's face it.. :(

I came to seek some suggestions, and look what is happening.

Sony55,
i respect your feeling about securing a federal job and traveling freely like a bird. Getting a federal job is also one of the main reasons i want to get naturalized. :)

Rest is in the hands of whoever is there at the interview.

This is it for me on this thread
Peace

I have not really thought abt Federal jobs but what kind of jobs do u guys have in mind?

As an example, take working in a National Lab (good job security). I have a GC and Indian passport, and work in science/engineering field. One of my former professors is a big shot at a prominent defense related National lab in the Bay area, and I was inquiring about employment chances there. He said that with Indian passport, it would take > 12 weeks to get the security clearance just to enter the gates of the lab for an interview. I gave up.... I have a German friend who recently interviewed at that lab, it took him 8 weeks to get the clearance to enter. If you are US citizen, you can enter right away.

Rahul,
I have tried to apply for the social security office. The manager there liked me and proceeded with the hiring procedure. She , however, stumped hard on the brake when she knew that i am not a citizen. She said that the Federal law prohibits even Green Card holders from working for the Social Security office. Moreover, I couldn't get the Grant from the Tennessee Assistance Association because it is limited to Citizens :(

Atc

I'm thinking Air Traffic Controller - lots of openings soon, due to retirees, myself being a pilot and 5 years military experience under my belt, should give me the much needed points to apply.

One HUGE benefit I see with having a Federal job, is one can retire after 20 years will full benefits and (if young enough) still have time to start a second career. :D

You get plenty of time to do side buisness. You NEVER have to over stay to your time and if you do then you will be compensated for every single second. No immidiate dead lines. Plenty of trainings. Your raise is fixed every year despite of your evaluation. Plenty of holidays. Enjoy latest technology.
Men its fun. :D
