Everyone has their own experience in getting the greencard. Unless you are the few lucky ones, you would encounter some obstacles. All my friends took at least 3 years to get GC. Only those friends' friends' friends got GC in 6 months (as being told as legends). This is NOT new. Let me retrace that for you if it is any consolation.
In the high of internet bloom in 1997 - 1999, people cannot even get H1B in order to work in US. Then there were three year increased quotas to solve that problem. At that time, students faced the cold hard reality to go back to their home country right after finishing Optional Practical Training.
In 2000 - 2001, when the internet bubble bursted, the crashing market triggered stricter rules in DOL. Rumors circled around that DOL would reject most of the cases. My lawyer procratinated my case quoting "would not get approved" so I got myself a new lawyer. At that time, people waited 2 - 3 years to get Labor Certification not to mention 140 and 485. The hope was very slim.
During 2002 and early 2003 (after 911), 485 approval was moving in the slowest rate imaginable. It stalked at Feb 2002 for a year! Desperation was across the board. I was caught in the slowest DOL approval rate and no job security company. Imagine that!
Then, suddenly everybody got lucky in late 2003 because of reduction plan in those departments. DOL and USCIS were processing in lightening speed. There were many happy faces. Some of them bitter sweet and some of them long time due.
Lest we forget, in the past 10 years, we all experience one or the other. Life is much better than the worst scenario and is, for most of us, worse than a smooth sail.
Even when the retrogression is set to 5 years ago, my guess is the worst could happen is 2 years wait before submitting 140 and 485 because not a lot of people are left in 2002 or 2003 and before.
Please don't go off the deep end here. Give it a year, things will be so much different that you would laugh at yourself. When this whole thing is over. You ask yourself: Did you have that leasure morning dim sum with your family? Did you enjoy the late night clubing with close friends? Life will move on, please enjoy a little bit more.
