I would really appreciate if some one can help me decide when to file for citizenship.

I got my green card in July 1999.

Went back to India in August 1999 (got my re-entry permit for 2.5 years)

I came back to USA in Febuary 2002.

After that I have not been out of the country at all (even for a single day).

Would the 4 year and 1 day rule apply to me? which means Can I file in Feb/March 2006. Please help me with this.

Thanks

Thanks JoeF !!

Would I have to prove at the interview, why I was out of country on a re-entry permit? Do they ask such questions. My parents are in a similar situation. Same dates apply to them as well.. so all of us were back in india for 2.5 years on re-entry permit?

Also, Normally I have heard from so many people that re-entry permit is only for 2 years and in our case we got for 2.5 years and we came back to US just before it was about to expire.

I am confused by the naturalization guide.
http://uscis.gov/graphics/services/natz/English.pdf
On page 22 of the guide (page 26 on adobe), its written under continuous residence .

"Fortunately, if you return within 2 years,
some of your time out of the country does
count. In fact, the last 364 days of your
time out of the country (1 year minus 1
day) counts toward meeting your
continuous residence” requirement."

Does that mean if you come after 2 years last 364 days wont be counted. I am confused by this statement.

Pleasse help.

thanks
