Time needed to apply for a Passport after GC

Hi

I got my GC through my employer. I was planning on applying for the Passport, and even though on the INS website it says one can apply 3 months before (i.e. 4 yrs 9 months) I have read and talked to folks who have applied for at 4 yr 1 day, 4 yr 6 mos. etc. Can you guys help me out here and let me know what happens if applied at 4 yrs etc?

You need to become a citizen before you apply for a US passport!!

Are you asking about applying for citizenship or passport?

That is for whom have left the country for more that a year with valid re-entry permit. I did the same. I left the country after getting GC for 2 years with valid re-entry permit and so I applied for citizenship after 4 yrs and 1 day.
