Time for SSN after stamping.

Hi,
Today my wife got her passport stamped with I-551 and applied for SSN.How much time does SSN take to come.Can she work without an SSN as now she is a legal permanent resident.

Normally it takes between 1-2 weeks.

Can she work without an SSN as now she is a legal permanent resident.

Yes, she can work. However, as she does not have SSN, probably her employer won't be able to put her in payroll until she get her SSN.
