I have my current h1b valid until end of september. My wife has her h4 valid until end of september. This h1b is through a cap exempt university.
Earlier this year i got a job with a company B. They filed a new h1b visa for me under regular quota in april. I got this h1b approved.
Now i want to go for stamping this new h1b (until which i cannot start work on 1 oct) in Tijuana. But when i try to book online appointment, it asks for my wife's receipt number. I don't have any receipt for my wife. I was assuming she can travel with me and get her h4 during my h1 b stamping. But when i called the MX number they said her name needs to show up in my I797B or we need to file new petition for her...have you heard a h4 petition. I dont know how to get my wife's h4 stamped? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

So your new employer did not file any I-539 (change / extension of non-immigrant status) along with your H-1B, within the US. In such a case, I heard several cases got H-4 stamping in their home country. Other option is to file an H-4 extension petition before going to a 'third country' consulate.

Thanks a lot.
Would it be possible to go to Canada instead? I have heard that you can add dependents to your appointment without having a receipt number for them. If she is traveling with me and takes her d-156 form and other required material then do you think it should be ok?
Thanks again.
