Dear Friends,
My in-laws are on Greencard(Family based) and they went to India to take care of my Brohter-in-law(he met with major train accident in India and he is in hospital for last 3 months).As per some of my friends they say if you are on gc you cannot stay out of country more than 6 months.Is it true?
I don\'t think they will be able to comeback with in 6 months.
Can any body tell me how much time one can spend out of country?
is it 6 months or 1 year?
Once they come to US after 6 months are they going to get stopped at Airport?
Both of them were working here, so we are filing tax returns for them.Will it help them if they show the tax returns at apt?
Do they need to get Doctor certificate to show to Immigration at APT.
Will it be useful if they meet Embassy at Chennai?

I will really appreciate if any body suggest me what to do?

Yes, there is 6 months limit to stay out of the country. But the law allow you to stay out side for one year if you have family emergency or something like that. Call the immigration help line and they will give you all necessary forms for re- entry permit which you get it before you leave the country. Don\'t worry. Your in laws are just fine until one year. Go to the INS web site and there are details in there.
