Interim EAD
I obtained an interim EAD card from Sacramento INS office . The procedure, nonetheless, is same anywhere else.
If you've passed 90 days from the ND of your I-765, you can obtain an interim EAD. (Mine had been over 180 days and I needed it.)
You need to take your I-765 original, passport with you. Stand in the initial line, obtain a token #. Go to the waiting room. Once your token no. is called, you can request for EAD and make your case (sometimes you may need a valid reason for obtaining but usually they don't need proof of reason - you could say you're changing your job or taking up another temp. job or your H1 is expiring, etc.) . You'll be sent to a room where EAD cards are issued. Put your documents under the window and wait to be called. If you're approved, you'll be asked to go and get a $0 receipt( since you've already paid fees at the time of filing). Get that, and put your documents back in the window. Wait to be called. Your photograph and fingerprint will be taken and you'll be issued an EAD card (during which you'll have to present your passport for verification).
