Tax transcripts

Does a tax transcript show that I paid off my taxes?

No. I got certified copy of my payment (electronic withdrawal) from my bank on their business stationery. I had only one year out of the last 5 years to pay to IRS.

If you received a refund this year, it should prove that you do not owe any money to the IRS as they would first assign any portion of your refund to unpaid taxes.

so what is the purpose of the tax transcript then?
How can I show that I paid off my taxes then?

Q. What is the purpose of the tax transcript?

A. That you filed your taxes. Filing your taxes is the important part (once the IRS knows how much you owe them, they can get the money one way or another).

I just got mine. It is only one page/year. It does show my account balance is 0. So I guess it means that I do not owe IRS any money. It also show some adjustment. For instance, I put wrong ssn for my daughter last year and IRS charged me interest and extra tax. I fixed it later and IRS canceled interest and the tax. It shows that process.

So tax transcripts will not work as proof in the citizenship interview?
Excuse me for asking (perhaps again, I don't remember) but what IRS forms will serve the purpose in the citizenship interview?

That'll be good enough for you.

There are 2 types - Tax Return Transcript and Account Transcript. First one is detailed one and will show how much you owe to / refund. Second one is the summary one and shows how much you owe to / refund. In case of refund (0 is neutral in your case and USCIS won't bother), you don't need to do anything, however, if you owe, it is better to have canceled check or certified copies of your bank statement to prove that actually you paid off the outstanding.

What IRS form is then the tax return transcript? or the account transcript?
Which one is free?

The naturalization process is altogether a case you are building up to show that you have met and maintained the eligibility requirements. As for any otehr case you build in your life, you provide concurring, supporting evidence.

Tax Transcripts amy not be 100% absolutely irrefutable official evidence but they may help you nad the USCIS to make an official determination.

Let us consider the hypothetical case of an applicant who never filed taxes. This person would have no way of attaching tax transcripts. In this hypothetical case, the USCIS could easily:
- verify with the INS whether taxes were filed or not
- get a sworn statement from the applicant
to make an official case for example to deny an application for Naturalization, for example based on lack of Good Moral Character in case the applicant has issued a sworn statement that he/she has filed taxes and the INS can prove oitherwise.

What IRS form is then the tax return transcript? or the account transcript?
Which one is free?

Both are free. IRS can provide last 3 years detailed one and the 4th and 5th years, the summary one. Please ask over the phone and you will get it in a week time.

Do I need Tax Returns/Transcripts from both Fed and State?
Or Federal Tax Returns/Transcripts are good enough?

Thanks
