Hi,

I filed my N400 and i am waiting for my Interview. Just a quick qutestion. I am filing based on 5 yrs , and i already requested the tax transcripts from IRS and also got them via Fax. Should i take the original tax papers too? Like the copies they give out in HR block when you file taxes every year ??

Let me know.

Thanks,
Sanjay

I carried both (transcripts & returns) but ended up not needing either. Carried the transcripts inside for the interview but kept the returns in the car along with some other "not so important" documents just in case. Its your level of comfort really.

one can call at the number given on the IL and prompts 2232 after entering ur SSN will take you through! Again, I am not sure if the transcripts are form 1722 that the 'requirements' sheet asks for! I did the phone request - once they come I shall let you guys know.

Complex_dude :

Thanks, Guys. I think i will take both just in case.

Complex_dude: I actually called the 1-800 Number for IRS and told the person i needed the tax transcripts for the last 5 years, I gave all the information and my fax number. The person was kind enough to send me all the 5 years and be on the line to confirm i received it as well.

Just call them and request it, thats the fastest way to get it!

Thanks.

I just called them up and was told will receive in about 2 weeks (I ordered by mail). Hope they send it to my new address which I gave them instead of the address mentioned in the latest return.

Yes.Get your Trancrips and copies from HR block.I was asked for both.Filed based on 5 years.Be prepared. This depends on officer...
Good luck.

Just requested the transcripts from IRS. Transcripts are more important. No validation for self-presented Return whereas transcripts are US Gov produced document. IRS rep was nice (prinited my transcripts and mailed it to my address) and was telling me the same

btw, IRS tax transcripts are needed only if you have taken trips lasting more than 6 months, correct? thanks.

They have the right to ask for any reason. To check the health of your marriage (by checking filing status), travel as you said (paying taxes on foreign income or not), dependent status (if you are naturalizing your kids), and I guess a whole lot more reasons.

It could also be "just because" the IO wants to see it.

i also agree with sanjoseaug20, Tax Transcripts are not only for foreign trips more than 6 mo.

It can be for many reasons including residency, marital status and good moral character (filing , and on time and paying taxes).

If my spouse and I filed all taxes jointly, would requesting one copy of transcripts suffice (and make a second photo-copy myself) ?

Or should I have requested two copies, one for me and one for my spouse ?

Complex-Dude,

Here is a simple solution to you complex question :) when you call IRS to request the transcript since you filed jointly, they are going to need her SSN and date of birth for verification purposes. The transcript is going to bear both your social security number and they can actually fax the transcript to your or mail them. Lastly, if you and wife file for taxes the last 4 years, IRS can send the returns for all those years for free...

good luck...

Complex-Dude, no need to request extra copies...just make copy yourself: one for yourself and another for your wife.

Note that Tax Transcripts are a great thing to have in general if you're doing taxes yourself via TurboTax or some such and e-file. Unless you print out the full set of forms, TurboTax sends to the mothership just the data and spits out a rather non-comprehensible summary form by default.

Transcripts - Are they just the copies of 1040, 540 or something more? While Turbo Tax spits out lot of irrelevant information, it still contains all forms which were submitted. Besides the IRS stamp, is there anything else which the transcripts would give?

I am curious because I have had IRS and CA send back more refund than I expected - twice in 13 years. Mainly miscalculation on my side. While the transcripts will show the correct formula, I am curious whether they will also have some officer's notes on the formula used, or the mistake made?
