Tax Transcript Question

The IRS office informed me that tax transcripts and records are available only for the past 3 years. If so, how does one get the tax transcripts for the prceeding two years (tax year 2000 and 2001)?

My telephonic requests resulted in two letters stating that the "records were not found" for those two years. That is when I called to check and the office confirmed that the transcripts are available only for the most recent 3 years.

Anybody else have similar experience?

Same thing happened to me.
IRS sent previous 3 years transcripts.
I assume for free transcript, you can request upto past 3 years.
If you want to go beyond that, you have to request actual copy
of the return (which costs 39 $ I think for each copy)

I am thinking of taking past 3 years transcripts and for 2 years previous to that,
printout of my return from turbo tax.

In very rare situation they ask for tax documents.
 
I called IRS 800# to request my tax transcripts between 1999 - 2005 (all for free). However, I received a letter about they could not locate my tax transcript of 1999. I did not bother to request an copy of my tax return since it would cost me 3x.xx
 
Got five years ...

We also got transcripts for the past 5 years ... in the past we got some (instant) transcripts also from the local IRS office. For N400 purposed I called the 800# since I had enough time to wait for their mail.

P.S. If my memory serves me right I believe there were different types of transcripts (simple and more detailed). I got simple one-page statements (which the adjudication officer did not want to see anyway)
