Tax-ID sufficient for Citizenship?

Hi,

My wife has never worked in US so for all Tax filing purposes we have been getting things done using her Tax-ID. We are planning to apply for US citizenship and was wondering if the TAX-ID is sufficient or do I need to get her a social security number?

SS number it's used for a variety of things. I strongly sugest she gets one.

SSN is requested on the N-400 form. It's probably not absolutely required, but an adult living with a green card and no SSN for 3-5 years is very unusual, and the interviewer probably won't even know what to do, resulting in "decision cannot be made" and the corresponding delays.

Its free, so why not get it? Also SSN is needed for getting passport.

The N-400 instructions say the following: "Print your U.S. Social Security number. If you do not have one, write ''N/A'' in the space provided".

Still, as the previous posters in this thread said, it is a good idea for your wife to get an s.s.n. anyway.

Work or no work if she has a GC it is better that she gets a SSN.
