Tax - H-4?

We are filing tax form (I am on H-1 and my wife on H-4).

We heard that for my wife (H-4) she needs to apply for a sort of number from INS office, before she is entitled to get a tax reduction as a dependent.

Is that right? What should we do? What is the procedure?

Thanks! After the approval of I-140, my wife would be considered as "alien of lawfully admitted permanent resident". In such a case, can she obtain a Social Security Number?

We are about to file I-485, and guess that if we include the tax form in I-485 petition, we would lower the chance to get a RFE. As it takes 30 days to get a ITIN number, we wonder how we could speed up the process, and obtaining a Social Security Number instead of a ITIN number might be an alternative(??).

Any input would be appreciated!
