Tax Dilemma

I have a question, I was an illegal immigrant for 8 years came in as student after degree did not leave, I worked and paid my taxes so i met this woman and we got married, so when it got to tax time she tells me that we should file single and not even 'single while married' which is kind of advantageous (And greedy too) to her in that she has many dependants (parents and kids) and also like i discovered she is a tax cheat and as she happens to be the one filing for me, trying to make me legal immigrant, i could not afford to argue with her. Back then if she tells me "Jump Dave" i not only Jump twice but also ask "is that high enough?" . I feared If she refuses to continue the process considering i was an illegal immigrant for 8 years. I might find myself in a one day delivery box back to Ghana

So after some three years i finally get my green card and in the next two months i would be eligible to file for citizen, But should i, would they always ask for the Tax records of both of us. I do have my tax transcripts for the past 6 years all filed as a single guy.And we have Health Insurance, Bank Accounts, Credit Accounts, Bills together. My wife even though she is a tax cheat there is no way i would put her out to the authorities and besides she does all the jumping now

You are also a tax cheat, if you filed as single instead of jointly or "married filing separately". You better straighten out your tax situation before applying for citizenship ... file amended returns as "married filing separately" for the years when you falsely claimed to be single, and pay any taxes and penalties owed if that change makes a difference that causes you to owe more.
