Switch from AOS to consular processing?

Hello Everybody,
We have a pending I-485, filed October 2002. Now we will leave the US next summer for about two years. We thought we'd be through the GC long before that, but now it looks like it might take a lot longer.
Somebody advised us to try consular processing, which, he said, might be completed in a couple of months.
What do you think?
I really appreciate your advice.

Thanks! Yes, our application is employment based, so may be that would work.
