Surviving while waiting

Hi Room,
I would like to know how we all survive while waiting for the INS outcome on an application. We know work is not allowed, so during the 180 days how have you survived? Is there any form of assistance available to Asylum Seekers while outcomes are pending? How do you live, how do you sustain yourself etc...? Does anyone have any suggestions on this matter...

I am sorry, but I am not aware of any sources of government aid. Asylum applicants are by law ineligible for federal aid. You might want to investigate state and local government agencies in your area. Most applicants I know of rely on family/friends on a temporary basis. You must be creative.

You can submit an application for a work card 150 days after applying for asylum. It takes about two months to receive it.

Yes the visa has expired, but I believe whilst in proceedings and awaiting the INS outcome, an extension is not necessary...is this correct?
