About 25 years ago i immigrated to the U.S stayed about 1 year then returned to Canada where i have been working for the same company since my return.Entering the states on a recent pleasure trip the border guard informed me that i must surrender the green card that i recieved 25 years ago and that until i do i will not be permitted reentry into the U.S,big hassle because i have no idea where that green card is. Anyone have an idea what im supposed to do next? I get the feeling that the border guard is just making the preverbial mountain out of a mole hill but he has the power to put a flag on my file for any future trips to the states.

Give the facts in writing to US consulate in Canada. Get a confirmation of your reporting in writing. You may have to give up your GC status.

POE officer is right - you have to surrender your card - it is indeed long long time now.

If you are Canadian by birth expect little problem, if you are Canadian by other means add little more. If you are not a Canadian - expect lots more.
