Surrender Cert. and copy of the Naturalization Certificate

It says clearly in red on my US Certificate of Naturalization that "IT IS PUNISHABLE BY U.S. LAW TO COPY, PRINT OR PHOTOGRAPH THIS CERTIFICATE, WITHOUT LAWFUL AUTHORITY"

The application for Surrender Certificate requires a copy of the US Certificate of Naturalization. What should I do ?

Read this sentence clearly once again and put more stress on the Red/bolded sentence:
"IT IS PUNISHABLE BY U.S. LAW TO COPY, PRINT OR PHOTOGRAPH THIS CERTIFICATE, WITHOUT LAWFUL AUTHORITY"

"Without Lawful Authority" --- Dude you own this certificate and you have all the authorities to do what you would like to do with the certificate --- not that I am saying you start copying it and distribute it to every pop and mom shop ... but hey the wording can be interpreted in so many different ways and I would like to interpret it the way it is more convenient to me and if they have problem with it, sure do whatever they would like. I am already miserable with these morons at Indian Embassy, one more person can come and question my authority over the certificate for what I paid more than $650 ... any doubts?

ZzBb, I recommend you to make a copy and get your Signature Notarized from your bank/AAA/UPS store and be done with it, rather than start thinking too much about it. Its just a phase and it will go...

thanks sam012007. I guess it could be interpreted that way. Maybe it says only the legal owner of the document can make a copy.

Another option is the following: Take an InfoPass appoitment with your nearest USCIS office. Bring a photo copy of the naturalization certificate and have it signed/notarized/authenticate it with USCIS officer. That would resolve your predicament, I hope. I read about it either in this forum or from different site. All the best. FYI, I did not follow the above suggestion, as I am lacking so much patience and will to drive up to 60 miles and to take a day off from my work. So, I just sent a photo copy of the naturalization certificate.
