Surname with two words

Hello,

I am applying for dependent visa for my wife. The Surname in the Indian passport has two words in it. Eg. "DEF XYZ" (Note that there is a space between DEF and XYZ). The Givenname is a single word "ABC". I am not sure how I split these into firstname, Middlename and lastname. Clearly, firstname will be "ABC".

Can you please help what happens to the surname? Should the entire surname with the space in it be considered as last name or should the surname be split into lastname and middlename? If It has to be split, please suggest which part of the surname becomes middle name and the which part becomes the last name.

Is it recommended to get the name changed in the passport?

I would greatly appreciate your response.

Regards
