Dear All!

This portal has been such an useful site for discussions and last minute help. Thanks.

I entered NY "as an immigrant" on the 30th April. Here is my CP experience at Mumbai.

8:00 am: Reached consulate.

8:10 am: Was told that my shoulder bag will not do. Rushed to Raj-travel (a few 100 feet away from cons.) to deposit the bag; transfered all documents into a plastic bag (painful).

8:25am: Entered, and SHOWED fee receipt at counter-1. Guy asked me to sit by counter-10thru13.
*It is a first-come-first-serve, and since I was last to enter (cos of the bag) for the IV, you guessed it, I was the last to be interviewed that day :) **Take your fee receipt (the one you sent to NVC/St. Louis)

1:00 pm: Desi fellow calls me at counter-12. Asks for DS 230I and II, medical-report (Leelavati), Birth Cert and employment letter. Asks for copies and takes them.

*PCC SF 11/15/02, updated version obtained again (out of paranoia!) 4/1/03. i had to request an expeidited processing (thru email) cos i was leaving India 4/7! **Had two affidavits, from my dad and uncle, cos b.c. didnt have my name! ***Had all documents in folders and organized + copies. ****Leelavati was quite good and not too expensive either.

1:10 pm: Desi fellow asks me to sit down again.

1:20 pm: Called at counter-9. 1 desi (for translation) + 1 firang.

Q: desi: do you speak english?
firang: you better. otherwise i am rejecting you!
A: yes!

Q: you got a phd?
A: yes..

Q: what did you do for your phd?
A: "blah...."
"STOP. can you see i didnt understand anything..!!"
i smiled!

(there was a bunch of funny stuff which i will pass here)

Q: you are in the same category as einstien (i was on eb1). that shouldnt be!
A: i smiled.

Q: okay. raise your hand. say all documents are true!
A: raise hand.

"congrats. i am doing you a favor. your visa is approved"
desi: we cancelled your H1. come and collect your IV at 3:30 pm.

3:35 pm: was HOT and humid and dusty. waited till 4:20 and picked up my stuff.
-----------
POE/NY-JFK

1. entered the permanent resident/citizen line
2. the officer stamped my pprt and asked me to enter the room and hand documents in the order he gave em to me.
3. 30 minutes later, finger print and signature were collected. the guy stamped my pprt with the temp I551.
4. THAT WAS THAT.
-----------

Advise/Suggestions:

1. For interview have all your documents in ORIGINAL. i saw quite a few family-based applicants rejected (and some crying) cos they didnt bring the original!
2. Keep documents in order, and know where they are in your big bunch of documents. Have a copy of each original with its original.
3. Take whatever you can. More-the-Merrier! That way you will feel confident.
4. Dont take a shoulder bag or a back pack to the interview!
5. Read the things at immihelp.com
6. and yes, make sure your pprt is valid for atleast 8 months afterward. immihelp.com says 6 months. it is wrong.

point 6 was the one that scared me the most. thinking 6, i didnt bother. when i saw it was 8 it was too late (mine was valid for 8 months and 10 days or something!).

Good Luck!

:)

Congrats...

Well done....

Enjoy the difference in feeling of a GC temporary stamp in your passport.

Good Luck for the last leg of the GC process.. receive the plastic card.

Mine interview was on April 16 and POE at JFk on April 29.

hi cpdelhi! i remembered you while i wrote my note of thanks! thanks for your help with my pre-gc questions.

passport validity

krg, Could you please tell me where have seen this? Could you please give the site name.

6 or 8 months

The instructions in "packet-3" that NVC sends you (there will be info on b-cert etc. etc. as well), contains this information. If I remember it right, it is there in "packet-4" (from the consulate) as well. YOUR PASSPORT SHOULD BE VALID FOR ATLEAST 8 MONTHS FROM THE DATE OF INTERVIEW.

good luck and let me know if you need more clarification. you can renew your pprt (if you have enuf time) at one of the indian consulates. they typically take 4-5 weeks.

Re: 6 or 8 months

Hi KRG,
Congrats for completing the major process successfully.

A question regarding Affidavit for Birth Cirtificate:

Is there any specific format for the affidavit if the name is missing in our Birth certificate.

Can you please let me know which format you followed?

Thanks in advance,
Sam.

Congrats KRG

Hi KRG,

Congrats on successful CP Interview and POE.

I have an interview in June, had couple of questions

Did u stand in line outside the Consulate or just walked straight to the Security Guard and what documents did u show to the guard?

They have asked me to come at 8:30AM , what time would be preferable to reach there?

Did u take IRS9003 and Sailing Permit?

Thanks KRG and All the Best in getting the Plastic Card fast.

Cheers!
VinCP.

According to the memo issued by Colin Powell (http://travel.state.gov/state094440.html), IRS9003 is not required.

Sailing permit is a letter from the IRS (Tax dept.), which allows you to leave the country[USA]. It's not a requirement any more, in the sense that no CPers in recent past has taken any sailing permit. I just went to India to attend the CP interview in April 2003 and I didn't take any sailing permit. But if you still want to get one, you will have to go to the nearest IRS office and get one.

hi guys.

am trying to answer 3 questions in the same reply here. i hope its okay!

(i) cpdelhi posted the affidavit letter for the 'no name on bcert'. take it from dad with his/your mom's and your name, place and date of birth and 1 from from mom with similar information. if you are really paranoid take another one from a relative (once again with all the information). there are similar model letters at immihelp.com as well but this one by cpdelhi should work fine too.

(ii) sailing permit: cpdelhi is right - you dont need it anymore. but, if it isnt a hassle, and you want to take it, go to the nearest irs office with your pprt, tax returns from previous years and your air-ticket (dont waste a trip by not having any of the above). it takes em a few minutes to give you one.

(iii) as for standing in line/going straight, here's what to do: go to a security guard (+ there is a helper though she/he is tough to spot until spotted!) and tell him "Immigrant Visa". he should point you to get in. get there shortly before 8 am for 830 am. they let all the day's folk in at around that time!

good luck guys. -krg

darn! thought i was efficient, but missed one thing :)

--keep the appointment letter (p-4) and your passport handy. they will check those before they let you in. go to counter 1 after you enter.

Thanks Krg

Thanks Krg,

Appreciate your inputs. I was not sure if i would have to stand in line outside the Consulate or not. Looks like i will go directly to the Guard and tell them Immigrant Visa with Appointment Letter and our passports in hand.

Thanks again.
VinCP.

How about the Police certificate? I have one from Chicago consulate - do I still need one from Bombay?

Thanks.

Thanks.

Look in the other thread for answer.

One suggestion to new members. At present there is so much of
information here in this forum, you will find answers to most of your questions.

Take time to browse and pick up that knowledge.

One good way is to enter the forum and make a search with
a key word like 'Police Clearance Certificate' as an example.

I am not discouraging people from asking questions. I want you
to know that I and my fellow members enjoy answering your
questions.

Good day!

Raju
