I was returning to the States from Japan via Detroit a few weeks ago and had a very successful experience. My wife and I entered the same "citizen" lane. The lines were fairly deep but moved fast. The officer quickly found my temporary greencard stamp and asked me who sponsored my greencard. The stamp did not seem to surprise him at all, he was perfectly happy with my response and stamped my passport right away.
My wife was traveling on AP. He sent her to a different lane that is titled "special processing". He said I could go with her if I wanted to. In that lane, they asked her a few questions about her GC sponsor, stamped 1 (I believe) of her 3 AP copies, and returned 2 back to her. Not sure about the exact process and numbers, but they key is you need all 3 copies.
The person at the customs asked which one of us was paroled and which one was entering on GC. Looked at the forms and waved us through.
Overall, a very smooth experience. The officers were very courteous and knew exactly what they were doing.
