Medicals:
I did my medicals at Hinduja and it had been cake-walk.Reached the OPD Department at 6:30 AM and waited till 7:30 AM when they opened their offices. Was first in line, filled some paperwork, paid the fee of Rs.1800.00 per applicant.Asked to go to another floor and wait in the TV room (you would hear it as "TB" room,it took me a minute to figure this out that it is TV and not TB).
After about 15 mins,a nurse asked all of us to come in pairs to a room where there were 2 ladies. One doing the paper work and the other explaining the process. Then asked to go to another room to get height, weight and BP measured.
Came back to the first room, where a male nurse took blood samples and then asked us to go wait in the TV room. When all the applicants were done, our names were called and asked to form a line.Except for our dress, all of us appeared to be "prisoners" on parole with many onlookers.
We were marched across to the other part of the building and asked to sit while the "jailor" went to get the paperwork done. Then we were called into a room for chest X-ray. Men have to take off their shirts.Women were asked to go into a side room and wear a hospital gown. They were also asked to remove all jewellery, etc.The same man would X-ray both males and females.
I wondered why cant they have a female X-ray the women.Done the X-ray by about 10:00 AM and asked to come at 1:00 PM.
Reached hospital at 1:00 PM. After about 30 mins, one by one, we were asked to come into a room where there was a doctor who was very senior, very polite and nice. There was my chest X-ray on the viewing board(right term??) against the light. The female nurse who ushered me in, asked me to take my shoes off and lay on the bed and went out.The doctor came by,checked pulse, heart beat (I suspect mine was beating faster and I could hear it myself loud and clear even without the stethoscope),checked pupils, checked inside of mouth, pressed the abdomen and went back to his desk.I came back to my chair, wore my shoes. He asked me if I ever had suffered from TB( yes, this time it was right-TB).I said no and he asked me if I was sure, I confirmed. He made me sign once and said, I am done.I asked him if everything is OK and he said " yes, they usually are concerned about communicable diseases like TB and AIDS".I said ok, thanked him and came out when the nurse asked me to go wait in the waiting area. After about 15 mins, she called and made me sign a paper and handed my sealed Chest X ray and sealed medical report.
I was out by about 2:30 PM.
Consulate:
Appointment was at 7:30 AM.Reached Consulate at 6:20 AM and sat on a bench after getting off the cab. As it happens in the US, I thought my name would be called at 7:30 to enter the Consulate.I was dead wrong! After I sat on the bench for a minute, it struck me to go ask the security guy and when I told him about my appointment,he nodded his head in one direction where I could see 6 people waiting in a line.I told him, I have an appointment and do I need to still form a line? Impatiently,he just waved his hand towards the line! So,I went and stood in the line.
At about 7:00 AM, a man with a "choti" drove past on a motorcycle, loudly chanting religious hindu hymns and he also dared to leave the handle and raise his hands in prayer. Everyone in line smiled.
Lot of confusion about the line.As time passed by, people were coming in hordes.Everyone standing the same line.At about 7:10 AM, a security guy came and asked everyone to form 2 lines - one for first time applicants (for any visa) and one for all others ( including "pending cases". A pending case is one in which the applicant had already seen a consular officer before but was put on hold for lack of some document(s) and asked to come back with the required documents.) People started rushing to form the new lines and lots of confusion.I wondered, since this is a daily affair, why cant they put sign boards there as to who forms which line.
At about 7:25 AM,a lady came by to check the appointment letter and asked us to go inside.I was wearing formals with a tie and my wife in a suit.I went through security check, curtly asked if I have cell phone, music player, etc, my file checked and I entered the "sanctum santorum" . The female security did not bother my wife( perhaps the suit did the trick! ) Inside, a lady was impatiently and curtly asking people to sit.She gave us a list of the documents that we need to submit (I will list them later) and asked us very politely to take a seat in front of Window 10 and that we would be called (the suit again perhaps??)
At about 8:10 AM we were called to Window 10.
Indian lady:" Who is calling you to the US?"
We:"No one, it is a self-sponsored NIW Petition".
The lady was taken aback and thought aloud if this is possible. She conferred with another Indian gentleman and he explained it to her the category. Then she took all our documents and asked us to sit and we will be called. It was 8:30 AM.I was very excited that since we were the first, we would be out of the consulate by about 9:00AM.
We sat in our seats and waited. And waited. And waited.......
Shortly a window opened with an American Lady and an Indian guy by her side.He started out calling names - mostly "bens" - all family based and asked them in Gujarati to come to this window.
We waited.And waited......
I was getting angry at this point as all the other people who submitted after us, were being called first.I asked one Indian lady about this and she said"Wait, you will be called".Well, I thought we were doing the same and this was no new information.
Finally, at about 11:00 AM, we were called to this window.Went in, asked to raise our hand for oath and to sign the DS-230 Part2 and finger-printed.
The American lady Officer was hell bent in trying to catch us by cross-questioning all the information that we had filled in the forms. She wanted to see the 2year HRR Waiver Approval Notice which I fished out.She glanced at it for a milli second( I dont think she cared what it was)- perhaps just trying to make it difficult for us.Well, she perhaps did not know that we had waited about 2 years and gone through lots of problems on our way into her office.Curtly, she said "Congratulations, your visas have been approved" and asked us to come back at 3:30 PM to collect our passports.
With a sigh of relief,we came out and sat right in front of her office to put back all our documents in our files (there is no place outside that you could do this except to sit on the Bhulabhai Desai Road). The Officer started interviewing another person when she beckoned at us. I skipped a heart beat and felt my heart in my throat. My wife went in and came out with a sheepish look and said" Since we have finished, she wants us out of the consulate immediately, no more waiting inside the Consulate"! Well, though there was AC in there and the coffee very good, I myself was in no mood to spend another second in there than what was needed.Anyway,I took my time to put back my papers - our visas have been approved, no one can do anything now.Let her get mad at us for this silly reason, who cares?
Returned at 3:30 PM,collected our passports and 3 sealed packets.I was asked to hand over the packets at the POE.Checked our Visa stamps in the PPs and got out.
POE:
New Jersey: We were trying to get into the US Citizens and PR line when we were asked by the security lady to get into the line for visitors.I sort of protested and told her we are first time PRs.She said since we do not have our physical cards, we have to get into the other line.So we went into the visitors line. The officer took 2 packets only.Swiped our IVs in the PPs,checked something in his computer and asked us to give the packets to the Security Officer, who took us to a seperate room and asked to have a seat and we would be called. We were the third people to enter that room in that batch. So, I again thought we would be out in about 20-30 minutes.
So, we took seats and waited. And waited and waited.......People who came after us were processed first and sent away. And we waited.Again,I was getting angry as we had a connecting flight and running short of time.
An officer who seemd to be hispanic called an Indian Lady and asked her some question. She offered him more information than what he wanted to hear and he snapped at her " Just listen to me and shut up". You got it right, he used the words "shut up". Me and my wife were shocked.
After this lady had gone, obviously the supervisor, an American gentleman, approached this hispanic officer, stared into his eyes and told him he behaved in an unprofessional manner and he used the wrong words! He asked him to admit he was wrong. The hispanic officer stared at him for full 5 seconds, and while we could feel the tension in the air, the supervisor firmly repeated his order, the hispanic officer stared, then looked the other way and admitted. The Supervisor asked him to look straight into his eyes and admit.Me and my wife were getting a little uneasy and could sense the tension between the 2 men.The supervisor repeated his order and finally, the hispanic officer admitted.
Oh my Gosh! We were relieved and at the same time happy at the American Officer. We hoped we would not get the hispanic officer for our case.Well, we need not had to worry. Before he could process another case, the supervisor asked him to go stand outside at the Immigration counter and replaced him with another officer.
After about 2 hours,we were called, asked to sign a paper and finger printed and passports stamped. No questions asked.
We came out relieved and went to catch our connecting flight.
