Hey Folks!!

I am finally done. Had a very smooth interview in Mumbai.I am sorry for putting the post up so late. but I just got back from India yesterday. I thought I will put the POE experience as well.

Here are the details.

Medicals:

My Medicals were on the 26th of July. We were asked to come to the hospital at 7:30 in the morning. I had registered for my medicals at Breach Candy. There is a seperate building called the U.S. Immigrant visa medical examinations center. I went directly to that building and we were let in at 7:30 a.m. They check you registration number for the medical appointment and give you a number. Then they called us in according to that number. Luckily myself and my wife were first in the line .They called us in. They check the appointment letter ,passport and asked us to pay the fees(Rs.1800 per head)Then were were asked to wait for the blood test and the Xray. That is a matter of 10 minutes. But the catch is they wait for all the people to get done with their blood test and Xray so after we got our x-rays and blood test doen we were asked to come back at 10:30a.m.

At 10:30 we were taken to the main building and asked to wait for the doctor who would perform your physical and do the immunizations. So after a wait of 1 and a half hour I was called in for the physical at 1.00p.m.This again was a matter of 10 minutes. The doctor quickly took a physical and gave me one injection. The same for my wife. Then we were asked to come back at 3:00p.m. to collect the medical report.

The people handling this were very polite and everything went really smooth except for the time. Well that is one thing we have to accept.

Interview.

The interview appointment was for 8:15a.m.We reached outside the consulate at 6: 30a.m. Already there was a good 20 people in front of us. Then at 8:00 they started letting people in.At this point they seperated me and my wife .There was a seperate line for the ladies and a seperate one for the men. This is for the security check . After we entered they took the appointment letter from us.Then we were asked to sit in front of the windows 10,11,12 and we will be called for document collection. After this the long wait began. We were called at 12:30p.m. So we had to wait for a gruelling 4 hours. They said it is at random they is no first come first serve basis there.
So we were asked to come to the window#12,There a polite Indian gentlemen collected all the required documents. The documents asked for were as follows.

1.Passport(original)
2.Employment letter
3.DS230 Parts I and II
4.Original H1-B approval notice(Since I didnt have the stamp on the passport)
5.Birth Certificate.(copy)
6.Original birth affidavits.(for me not for my wife)
7.Marraige certificate.(copy)
8.I134 original for my wife.
9.Photographs.

First this person collected all the documents from me.Then he started collecting documents from my wife in the meantime he asked me to go and pay the fees(DDs) at the casiers counter which is on the other side of the room.

So now this person created our files and then asked us to wait . Then after 10-15 minutes we were called back to the counter # 12 for the interview.

There aws an American man and the previous Indian man. First we asked to raise our hands and take an oath that the info we are producing is true. And then we were asked to sign the form DS230 part II.

The questions asked were as follows.

1. So this company(refering to the name on my application) is sponsoring you green card?

I answered yes.

2. How long have you been workig with this company?

3. What is your job title and what do you do?

I was explaining and even as I was speaking he started the sign the DS230 part II.

Then our finger prints were taken and the American person told us that baring any problems with yuor finger prints your green card has been granted .Please come and collect your packets at3:30p.m.

So by the time we were done it was 2:00 a clock then we waited for some more time and collected our immigrant visa packets and the passports at 3:30p.m.

The visa sais it was valid for 6mnths and it says upon endorement at POE it will be valid for 1 year.

Port of Entry:

I entered U.S. on 23rd August. My POE was Detroit. When we reached the immigration we were asked to stand in the citizens line. But I think this was because there was a long line on the other side thats the visitors side. The agents opened our sealed packets and checked to make sure everything is fine. She asked me how long I have been working for this company. Then she cleared everything , gave the papers back to us and then she asked us to go to the counter number 37 or 38 on the other side. Another agent at counter 37 took our papers asked us to sign and took our finger print. Then he stamped the passport and told us that now your visa is valid for a year.

Then I asked him when we will recieve the actual green card. He said"Sir we tell you 9 mnths but realistically 3mnths tops you should recieve it"

I also asked him after I get it how long is it valid?
He said it will be valid for 10 years.

then he said all the best and we were on our way. All this just took 20 minutes tops.

Hello Raj,
Congratulations for successful interview !!!!

One thing different I noticed is you got a visa of 6 months and at POE you got it extended 1 year so my question is

Q. Did they stamp I-551 stamp in the passport ??? (I heard about it only one person from Delhi, you are the first one from mumbai so I want to confirm)

Thanks and enjoy your life. Join the "q" for the Welcome letter and Plastic card.

Raj,

Congrats and welcome back. Glad that the POE at DTW was smooth as expected.

vm,

The IV you get at the consulate is valid for 6 mos.

So you have to enter the US within those 6 mos. Upon your entry you will get your Passport stamped with I-551 which is valid for 1 year from that date.

I-551 stamp is always in th passport. What you are reffering to is the the Immigrant Visa (I don't know whether that is I551 also or not). This used to be on a A4 size paper. This is now provided like your H1/F1 visa stamps in the passport. I thought somebody in Chennai also got the MRV, but I'm not sure.

Raj:

Heartiest congrats. BTW...you were asked to stand in Citizens Line not because the visitors line was long but because you are entitiled to stand in Citizens/ GC line as you are a GC holder.

Alren,
I am aware of this process but I wanted to find out that if I-551 stamp (which is given at POE) is also given in the passport along with the Imm. VISA paper at the US consulate. B'cause as I remember the Delhi guy mentioned he received it at the Delhi consulate (may be I have misread it, if he has metioned the same what you have mentioned above)

Thanks

When you get the 551 stamped, that is your temporary proof of permanent residency. You are not a PR till you are in US. So there's no question of 551 stamp on the passport at the consulate.

The IV sticker visa in the passport is in lieu of the A4 size paper visa given stapled to the packet.

Congrats Raj!!!!!!!
By which airlines you travelled and what was your transit airport???? Did u take any transit visa??????
And the same question, you got I-551stamp in the form of paper in your passport OR MRV in your passport .
These clarifications will definitely help me.

Alren:
i am still not clear that these days you get the I551 stamped in the passport or you get the IV sticker glued in the passport or stapled on the packet.
thanx

Sorry to butt in ...

Looking at his POE it would be Northwest , with a very rare chance of BA and Lufthansa.

But if there are transit visa issues, then Northwest will be way to go. No transit hassles.

I551 stamp and MRV are 2 different things. You get the I551 stamp on your passport at the POE.

alren:
sorry, i missed the rashmi_rau posting and ur answer to her.
i guess it's clear to me now.
thanx anyway for clarification.

No problemo. Glad to help. How are you prep. going on? Did you decide on your length of stay in Mumbai etc.

raj:
again, as rashmi rau u also got the IV glued in the passport somewhat similar to the NON immigrant visa or Mumbai is still giving the IV paper stapled to the packet.

thanx

Hi Anushri

I traveled Lufthansa. Yes I had already applied for transit visa for germany. This was because I didnt have my H1B visa stamp in the passport. I just had my H1B approval notice. The way it goes - Indians require a transit visa in germany only if they do not have a valid visa stamp in the passport. If I would have had the visa stamp on the passport I would not require the transit visa. But you might want to check this in your case coz these rules keep changing. Best go NW there is no transit visa required in Amsterdam.

Yes I got the IV glued on the passport in Mumbai . The glued IV on the passport shows a validity of 6mnths. It is also printed on the IV that it is valid for a year upon endorsement ,which is the I-551 stamp that was put on the passport at the POE.

Hope this answers your questions.

All the best.

{ That make sense, and I am clear now. ... Thanks }

Hi raj,
Can you pl tell me if the german embassy requires original H1-B approval (extension) notice to be sent for transit visa or do they accept copies?

Thanks,
Dilbert

So did the stamp the 551 on the IV stamp or on a page across it?
