Stupid question about independent reference

I asked some professors in my field to write letter for me. I have not collaboration with them. I know them through some conference. In their letter, they mention when did they first meet you, and they get familar with my work through technical exchange, journal publications. Is that OK? Does independent letter has to be from some expert who do not know you by face, but know your name from publication?

Yes and No!!!!!!!!!!
It depends on how much involvement he has with you.
If he/she mentions anything about future or past collaboration interest in the letter then they are not independent. .....otherwise they are independent.

I got as many as 10 letters from people whom I met during conference and my cover letter was addressing them as independent.
