Can people with pending asylum status go to Universities or intern (unpaid, before getting an EAD)??

Sure, more than that once you get Alien Number you're not required to pay state fees as international students. You will be paying the same amount as state residents. Only you're not allowed to get financial aid before approval asylum.
As for unpaid job, why not. You're in legal status so you're free to any volunteering.

Really? But what will I be called? I will not be an F-1 student, with an I-20, nor a domestic PR or US Citizen. How should I be enrolled in the university. Would I be able to work on campus and stuff?

You status name is "i589 pending"
That's fine, for them you're legal alien.
You will be paying for credits as domestic PR or Citizen. DOn't worry just go to them show that you're waiting for the asylum and your alien number.

Dude what you are saying is not quite correct, first before even be accpeted ,the university won't because a law recently came out that all those enrolled must be in legal STATUS ,STATUS is difffrent from pending asylum ,but I dont mean they cannot take him ,it just that it will be complicated and he will have to pass a lot of steps ,since tution is based on residency and status. As an asylum applicant you have NO STATUS AND YOU HAVE NO RESIDENCY IN THE USA ,also you are neither legal nor illegal this is because the law doesnt define very well this section since there is a possibility of you being illegal or legal ,so it is not well clear on that. Also when it comes to tution ,the college is very strict on this because they will determine that based on your residency ,I never meant to dissapoint you but that is how it is .But I wont advice you to take my words of right ,but just try and see what universities will say about that.

Well thanks for the correction. Thant really makes sense in theory.
But on practice few of my friends were successfully enrolled to colleges and universities of NYC with pending asylum and no other status in background(visas were expired).
You have NO RESIDENCY IN THE USA, but you can be resident of the state in non-law mention i.e. for DMV just because you're living there.
The law doesn't define well this section since there is a possibility of you being illegal or legal, as you said and that's correct but if you're not under removal proceedings then you're awaiting for your hearing as legal alien. You have EAD, SSN and possibility to travel abroad with advance parole. These are more likely attributes of legal status(or how it can be called) rather than illegal even if the law doesn't define this uniquely.
In other words there are no problems to apply in NY area. As of other states I do not know maybe they use other rules.

Does anybody have negative experience while applying to the colleges with i589 pending?

you right ,it depend on states because here in Missouri ,it is completely different ,no university will accept you if you don't have a status and the law clearly says that
