Guys,

I am currently doing my Bachelors and I am unable to get a student loan as I don't have a green card. I do have federal loans but other private lenders such as sallie mae or banks have refused to give me a loan due to lack of GC although my federal loans were given to me by sallie mae.

Any advise how can i get a private loan.

Thanks

Ed

You should contact your school's financial aid office, or CHELA... they will guide you how to let the lenders know about that your current status allows you to have the same benefits as a PR (in private student loans).

I am an asylee too, currently working in my bachelors too at UC... I didnt need to make private student loans; fafsa, grants, stanford and perkins loans were enough... but my brother who is an asylee undergraduate too made some private loans with no problems with the help of his school finaid office...

Good luck,

Sallie Mae have a program for non-Citizens/Residents, or you can apply with a US resident/Citizen cosigner. All require good credit Call them up.

But again, why would you want to get additional loans? Stafford and Grants should be sufficient, aren't they?

The first step is FAFSA. Fill it out and they should be able to give you a few federal and state grants plus subsidized and unsubsidized Stafford loan. After a year as far as I remember I was eligable for Perkins loan as well. Also you should consider applying for scholarships.

I believe you are eligible for financial aid , my wife was a derivative asylee,

whwn she got financial a id from QUEEN BOROUGH COMMUNITY COLLEGE

GOOD LUCK TO YOU

If you go to any local bank like Bank of America, Chase, Wachovia or Wells Fargo(west coast) they will offer you a private loan without asking for your GC. Their decision will be based on your credit history though. Good luck.

You should difinitely contact your school's financial aid office.... I had applied for financial aid when I was an asylee and 'was studying in San Jose State University... I didn't have my I-94 (with asylum status granted stamped on it) so I gave them a copy of my RTD which they verified from USCIS and my application for financial aid was approved....

My yearly college fee is 13K with financial aid and federal grant that I am getting at the moment is 7K that leaves me with a balance of 6K per year that I need to cover. I did speak to my financial aid office and they gave me a list of lenders and when I called them they need a co-signor who is US Citizen or a green card and that I need to have a green card so I can apply on my own. As for my credit it is only 2 years old so I doubt it very much that a bank will give a 24K without a co-signor.

Any other suggestions.

I don't think that should be a problem. They may only deny you loans based on unsatisfactory credit history. Dept of Ed treats asylees like permanent residents so ask these lenders to review their policies.
