Strange Dilemna...dual applications.....Please help!

My I-485 application is pending adjustment of status(well over 360 days)!My wife started a new process through Company A. Now she is likely to get laid off (July 1, 2002) before she can file for I-140. Company A says they will transfer her to company B (sister concern and business partners).

Questions:
1. She does not have EAD but has applied for one. Can she work on EAD?
2. Is there a way she can salvage the time pertaining to her application while working for company B? If yes, then how?
3. How soon does she have to re-apply for an H-1B given the fact that 6 years are almost over...will INS grant a transfer/extension?
4. Should she even apply for I-140?
