STEM OPT Denied while H1B approved under consular processing

Hi,

I got picked in the H1B lottery and after that decided to go with Consular Processing. Since my F1 OPT period would end on 9th July, I also applied for STEM OPT.

When I submitted my STEM OPT request to my university, they responded saying that I need CAP GAP. When I showed that my application was under consular processing, they said the dates in SEVIS record were wrong. My university reached out to SEVP but they said SEVP will not fix the record because H1B is not approved. So in this case, they gave me an I20 with wrong dates but gave a support letter to upload along with this. I submitted my STEM OPT application with this information.

Now my H1B got approved on Oct 8th. I got the approval notice and everything. But on Oct 25th, I got a notification that my STEM OPT was denied. The denial letter said that since my H1B status is active, they cannot approve STEM OPT.

After this, I contacted my university and they said they will now work on correcting my SEVIS record as step 1.

But I am not sure what is the next step. In this case, where H1B is not active and STEM OPT got denied, what status am I in right now? What should I do next? Is there a way to inform USCIS of the mistake without filing a motion to re-open?

Thank you for the help!
