Staying Outside US with a GC

Hi,

1. I would like to know, once you get your green card how long you can wait before entering US.

2. After entering, is it possible you wait until you receive all your documents and do all registration - let's say live about a month in the US and the go out US.

3. Stay around less than 6 months and then come back to US and start living permanently.

I just have the need to buy some time due to unfinished business in my country.

1. You don't receive your greencard after the interview, you "only" receive an immigrant visa. With that you have to enter the US within 6months (then the immigrant visa becomes a "temporary greencard" for a year.

2. It can take quite a big longer than 1month till you have your social security card, greencard, etc. but as long as you have an address in the US where those things can be sent to, you don't have to wait till they all arrive.

3. no problem

Igmu,

Just to confirm, do you mean 6 months after activating the green card or 6 months from the time they issue the temporary green card?

So if I get my immigrant visa on Jan 2009, I can wait until June 2009 to activate it. After activation, I go back to my home country and stay another 6 months. Is this ok?

6months from the issuance of the immigrant visa until the activation the green card. I have read some place (not on official websites) that the rules for after the activation of the greencard are as follows:
0-6months: no problem
6-12 months: you might need some proof that you actually took on permanent residence in the US (such as proof that you own a house, job contracts, etc.)
over 12months: you need a re-entry permit

Hi,

thanks for the information.
So, I get my immigrant visa, I have 6 months to enter US.
Upon entering, my immigrant visa becomes temporary green card.
Then after some time (1,2,3 months depending on the case) I will get my real Green Card and my SSN card, etc.
Then (or even before that) I can leave the US for up to 6 months without a problem for entering again.

Is my understanding correct?

Thanks again!

You can leave the US again before you receive the real green card (many people do that). However, I have read in this forum that certain air companies (Air France was one of them I think), don't accept the temporary green card and might therefore cause problems (which is legally wrong of this company).

Wait GC before leave US

Hi,

I had the Interview in Venezuela last Thursday and I got my inmigrant Visa.

The consul told me in the interview that, after entering US, you should wait until you receive the green card and then you can go out US.

Is there an official site where i can check this?

Anybody else has had an experience about this?

I wish my child will finish the school year in my country

Thanks
