staying in US after applying for citizenship

Hi Everyone,

I wanted to know if we can travel outside US after filing the application for US citizenship? Is there something we need to do before flying?

Thanks.

Yes, but your continuous residence and physical presense is evalutated at the time of the interview and at the time of your oath. So don't travel enough to break those rules.

Otherwise, just track the dates and make sure you passport gets stamped. When you get to the interview, mention it to the immigration officer.

Yeah make sure you're home when the letter for the FP and the interview letter arrives to tell you your dates for your FP and for your interview. Which of course you won't know unless you're home...

It is desirable to have somebody open your mail if you are away while you are waiting for your FP appointment which can come in only a few days after your application. If you miss it, not the end of the world as you can do a "walk-in" afterwards rather than reschedule. I did this with no negative consequences that I am aware of.

However, if you travel while waiting for interview appointment it is ESSENTIAL to have somebody open your mail and be prepared to return to the US to keep the appointment. Rescheduling this is reportedly a big headache and causes delays.

I think it even mentions that missing the interview without prior arangements is viewed as abandoning the petition, in that case you would then have to start all over and pay the fee all over again.

I you do know the date (someone gets your mail while you're gone), then yes you can re-schedual both the FP and interview. They'll let you know when the next one is, could be a long long wait...

Yes, but if you get your interview sheduled while you are away, then you probably want to be able to rush home. Otherwise, it might be worthwhile to wait until you return to submit your N-400. Processing can be as little as 2 or 3 months, and as long as 2 to 3 years these days.

"Continuous Residence" and "Physical Presence" are two of the requirement for naturalization. Look in the "Guide to Naturalization" to see what they mean.

Yep this is a case where it's definatly best to just file when you return. Being out that long could cause headaches in the interview itself right before, not to mention some have had really fast processing times (including myself, had the FP, Interview and Oath ceremony in less then 4 months). So definatly you'll want to just hold off on the entire thing until you'll be back to stay and then file...
