Status of baby born in India to US citizens

Hi,

I would like to know what would be the status of a child born in India to US citizen (parents). Would the child be considered an Indian and apply for Indian passport and then visa to come to US or be considered a US citizen and get an US passport.

Any help is appreciated.

Depending upon your preference, the child could qualify for either Indian citizenship (by birth) or U.S. citizenshi (derived from parents). The only requirement is that both the parents should have been in the US for "some time" after age 14, I believe. After birth you would go the U.S. consulate/embassy and get a certificate for birth abroad. This could then be used as a basis for applying U.S. passport for the child while you are in India.
