Just sharing what I experienced in the past...
Long back I did 3 inquiries (about 6 months apart each) calling the 800 number, and on all 3 times they promised that I would get a letter on 4 weeks. It has been 2 years from that and I am still waiting....
In the other hand my lawyer was able to talk to an officer and she was able to get a "verbal" status (not official) on the spot. I think my lawyer got the information from had a buddy in California despite my case is in Texas.
Bottom line... if the lawyer does not charge you $$ for the service I would advise to use the lawyer.
