Status inquiries to USCIS

I called the USCIS # and use the sequence below to see if I can get the status of my case.
1-800-375-5283, press 1, 2, 2, 6, 1, receipt #, 1 (to confirm SRC), 1 (to confirm number), 3, 4

I tried two different times (yesterday AM and today PM) and both time, I was told my the immigration officer that they do not give the case status over the phone any more.
When asked when this policy went into effect, the officer said last week.

Anyone else had similar experience? Did I miss any information about this?

I had a similar experience. I did not ask about the time the new policy took effect.
