statistics from 2002

The INS has just released its asylum statistics for FY 2002.

25919 people were granted asylum by the INS alone

I recalled that immigration judges granted about 9000.

Add the BIA and Form I-730 approvals to these.

Soon people will have to wait for more than 20 years.

Gilbert,
I have mixed feelings about these statistics. On one hand, I am happy that immigration officers are more understanding and more educated. My initial impression about these folks is that the majority of them are underqualified uneducated insensitive bigots. On the other hand, 20 year waiting period for asylees to adjust is the worst news. You know, asylees and refugees are the ones whose cases needed to be expedited the fastest since they have no choice but to stay in this country. Whereas other immigrants can simply go back if they wish. So sad.

Shamshon,

One silver lining I see is that the seriousness of the situation is going to demand Congresssional attention soon lest the whole asylum system becomes a joke.

Those are good news

I agree, if they don't do something, in a couple of years an asylee won't be able to recieve a GC in his/her lifetime.
So the bigger the problem, the sooner the solution.
