Starting work while H1 has not yet been approved

I will be starting work in a new company on August 16. They have filed for an extension/change of employer to my current H1B sponsored by my current emplyer. It looks like the VSC will take forever to process the extension request. Can I start working even if it is not yet approved by Ausgust 16. What are typically the chances that an extensiion be rejected? It is my first extension and have been maintaing my legal status all along.
 
If you are currently in a valid H1 status and have filed for an H1 transfer to another employer, you can begin working just with a original receipt notice from USCIS.
 
What happens if extension is denied.

Is it possible that the extnesion be denied. what happens to the status then.
 
Anything is possible. If you begin employment and then get denied you need to terminate your employment immediately.
