Start dates...

Hi there. As you know, the employer letter needs to indicate the duration and temporary nature of the employment.

Does the letter actually need to specify a start date?

Can it state something like "The start date [with this company] is dependent upon TN approval, and is scheduled to end 364 days following the date of approval"?

Any thoughts are welcomed!

You can write something around these lines...

COMPANY XYZ requires Mr. X's service temporarily for a period of one year, upon approval of TN status.

From what I heard, it's not a good idea to state a date. It implies that you're sure that you'll get approved for the TN status and this might upset the officer.
