Start citizenship process and moving overseas

Hi everybody,

I've been a US green card holder for 12 years and my company (an international organization of which the US is a member) is transferring me overseas for five years in 45 days.
Do you know if I can start the citizenship process now? My wife and kids are all US citizens. Thanks in advance.

See a lawyer about this. Do things wrong, and you could lose not just your chance at citizenship, but also lose your green card. Before leaving, you may need to do certain things like filing an N-470 to preserve your continuous residence for citizenship purposes. A lot also depends on if and how the USCIS recognizes the organization you work for.

Well you certainly want to investigate the N-470, which effectively is your only lifeline to obtaining citizenship if you do move abroad. Find a good immigration lawyer - preferably one who is looking out for your interests rather than the company's - and discuss the procedures and pitfalls with them first.
