Staple or paper clips - N 400 application

I do not think we should be stapling the N 400 form, GC copies while mailing them to USCIS.

I assume that N 400/GC copies/Check/Photos can be "attached together" by a paper clip.

Any other suggestions ?
Thanks

I didn't use either staples or paper clips. I just put the pictures in the photo store little folder and everything else was just free in the envelope. So far no problems with it. I remember long time back there was a long discussion on this, and someone contributed a page (I think in USCIS) with instructions to assemble an application, with some flat fasteners and punching holes on the pages. I don't think this overkill is needed.

My 2 cents.

A very trivial question:
What envelope are people using to mail their N-400...Do you just use the ones given by USPS for Priority or Express mail, or do you use "regular plain" envelopes to send things in?

BTW - is there a real need to send OVERNIGHT paying the extra $ at post office? (if we have a real advantage getting it earlier by 3 days then probably yes)...Would Priority mail (2-3) days suffice?

I used a regular envelope, big enough for the application to go inside without folding it.

No, I just sent it regular mail, it arrived to them promptly. I don't think it's worth spending the extra money on a fancier mail service. You can see from my signature that it was pretty quick.

I mailed my application on a Friday evening from Michigan (to Nebraska) via regular mail. The NSC received it on Monday morning. With Priority Mail it would have been delivered on Monday morning as well. WIth Express Mail it would have been delivered on Saturday or Sunday and the NSC would not have opened it until Monday.

As Huracan writes paying extra for postage is not worth it. Also a great lesson about the N-400 application is that it helps develop patience.

Detroit DO - NSC
03/20/07 Priority Date
03/23/07 Notice of Action received
03/23/07 FP letter received
04/12/07 FP done

Use paper clips if you want but do not use staples.

I would strongly recommend that you use Certified Priority Mail with Return Receipt. It costs less than about $10 inclusive and is surely worth it. This will be 2-3 day delivery max. Overnight not required in my opinion.

Yes, my lawyer for the originaly AOS I had filed years back stated to use paper clips for all INS forms, but not to use staples...

Yes, I agree with the no staples comment. However, USCIS puts your pictures in one of this translucent paper little envelopes and staples this to your application.

Can I mail 2 applications in one envelope

Can I mail both mine and my wife's N-400 applications in ONE envelope to USCIS - or is this not permitted. I searched but could not find this information on the USCIS site.

If we mail separately, I assume we may get separate dates for FP and interviews etc. - and it would be so much easier to get the same date. Or does USCIS treat the applications of a husband and wife as one unit since the A-numbers of the spouse are within the application, even if they are mailed separately.

Best is to mail them separate. That is what I would recommend to you.
This avoids any confusion or mix-ups.
Yes, you may get separate dates for FP etc. But this is a small price to avoid mix-ups.

In anycase, processing is separate and one of you could get stuck in namecheck, the other may get processed faster etc.

Yes you can send both in one single envelope but... your paperwork and your wife's can get mixed up through postal transit. For example your wife pictures could end up being stuck to your application's paperclip. Or worse a check gets stuck in another application, and this would lead to have one application accepted (and a check returned) while the other would be returned because the check was not found.

To keep it short: the best would be to have your application with attachments (photos, check) in one envelope, your wife's application with attachments in another envelope, both envelopes in a bigger envelope mailed to the USCIS.

Husband's and wife's applications are not processed simultaneously. It may be a blessing in disguise if one of the spouses has a name check taking longer, since at least one of the applications still can be processed at normal speed...
