Stamping experience in Wichita, KS

I have not seen any experiences about this office so I thought I'd type mine.

While a PP stamp is no longer necessary for most people, I am flying out to China for business shortly and there is a good chance that my card will not be in before I leave, so I need the stamp.

There is plenty of public parking in the area, it's a self-pay type parking lot and it only costs $2 to park (and I didn't see a time limit).

I got there at about 10:20 am and only 1 of the 3 windows was opened. You have to go to the same window to get a ticket with a number so you have to wait until the attendant is finished helping the current person before you can ask for a ticket. A less than ideal set up. My ticket was B523 and they were serving B517 at that moment.

There were several families with small children and one couple waiting for an interview. It's a small office. Cell phones are allowed and there is a bathroom in the waiting area. Food and drinks are not allowed.

It took about 30 minutes for them to call my number. I showed my 485 approval letter and my passport, I explained that I needed to travel shortly and that I doubt my card will be in before that. The officer said that my card will probably arrive soon but that she will stamp the passport just in case. She talked very softly and she was very hard to hear. She went away and came back two minutes later and returned my passport and approval letter. She said "your stamp allows you to work and live anywhere in the United States as well as to travel outside and come back in. Your card should arrive shortly."

She never asked for my EAD, AP or passport pictures. No fingerprint was taken since now all of that is part of the biometrics procedure. I believe I'll have to return for biometrics for the card since my prints were taken in November, before the new rapid card production system.

There is a sign that says that the office closes from 12 to 12:30 for lunch. They also say that if they have a lot of people waiting, no more consultation tickets will be given out after 2 pm. There are no infopass appointments at this office, they work on a walk-in basis.

Thank you for your post cfiler. You must be an engineer, your post is very detailed :) I think you might even be working for Midwestern Aircraft :)

I am also in Wichita and I got approved end-May. I am currently waiting for my biometrics appointment letter. Your post will be helpful in case I can't wait for the card and I need to get a stamp sooner.

Muchos gracias!

I had my passport stamped at Hartford, CT. It was pretty starightforward. But the thing I would like to mention is that the officer did an IBIS namecheck on me right in front of me. He had a form that said IBIS something. Then I asked him, you do an IBIS check even during stamping ? He said we have to do what we have to do and jokingly added you can never be sure!
I must also add the check took about a couple of minutes, I know this because after enetreing my info in the system he was checking it and the response came back in about 2 minutes.

I'm not an engineer nor do I work for an aircraft company, but thank you for the comment :)

I forgot to add that the officer kept the I-94 card that was stapled in my passport. Later I saw her with something white crumbled in her hand and she threw it away. It looked like it was my old I-94 card but I can't verify that.

Wow -- 2 mins ... so much for Name Check delays :)

Not sure if IBIS name check is the same as the dreaded FBI name check - but how different can it be ?!?

Oh well - maybe they'll clean up their act soon

Cfiler,

For passport stamping purposes, does the Wichita ASC require a letter stating the reason for travel (business or otherwise). I'm thinking of having our passports stamped since we may travel anytime in the next 2 months (for personal reasons) and we haven't received the biometric notices 50 days after I485 approval. Can I just go and ask them to stamp using personal travel (parent's health) as reason?

Thanks,
geekman

I brought a letter from the employer but they never bothered asking for it, they just stamped it when I told them I needed to travel soon.
