Hi Folks

Is 485 broken into multiple stages?

I know there are security checks that needs to happen after they receive ur FP.

Is there any more stages that INS uses internally or getting assigned is the only miracle step that needs to happen.

2 stages

Yes, there are 2 stages in the I-485 process.

On the first stage your application rests in a drawer for 12 months. Depending on the Service Center, it can stay up to 15-16 months in a drawer.

During this stage, you are a slave to your current employer, you turn down promotions so you will not jeopardize your job description. You also pray that the economy will recover and that you will not get laid off. Depending on your immigration situation you will not be allowed to step outside the country until the drawer stage is complete.

As you can see, you do all the work during the drawer stage.

On the second stage it is actually when the INS decides to pick up your application from the drawer and do what they were not able to do in the previous 12 months.

To slow down the process they can issue an RFE (request for evidence) which could have been provided one year before had they done their job.

It is really a fun experience.

Hang in there, fellows!

And during second stage if you are unlucky to get a officer who had a fight with wife/GF in the morning then your case might get transfered to local office for a interview . And if u happen to be in SFO area local office then u have to wait from 6 to 12 months again for a interview.
