I received a DV immigrant visa and plan to enter the US soon. I would like to apply for a Social Security Card and SSN on my own. I understood that I would get my Social Security Card and SSN faster that way.

Is this possible? Do I need to mention anything about this to the DHS officer at the port of entry about this?

Not sure what you mean “on your own”. The process will be automatically triggered when you enter and you should receive the SS card within a couple of weeks at most. You can try going into an SS office to get the actual number before you get the card. Some people have been successful trying this and others haven’t.

I was under the impression that I could decide whether I wanted the process of issuing a Social Security Card and number to be automatic or that I should submit a request to the nearest Office on my own.
