Hi all,

I have been in the US for about 2 years now and have applied for the H1B visa. I was out of status for 3 months. I have SSN with no work authorization. Currently my H1B status has not been approved but my M1 is approved and I have I797C with me. I misght go to Dhaka and get it stamped there. My question is: Is it possible that I can go to Social Security office and change my SS card for valid to work even though I only have I797C.

Please advice.

Thanks

NOT LIKELY

Social Security is running with new rules since 9/11. You will need to demonstrate your employment authorization: i.e. your admission as M-1. When you return, they will be able to help you.

require i-766 / i-688b along with i-797c for SSN?

Hi ,
I entered US on B1 visa ,applied for extension.Meanwhile filed my h1b through premium procession option and received approval notice (i-797c) last week.I-797c states that my change of status has been approved and that i can work for the employer .Also states that no extra documents are required for work authorization.
But When i went to the local SSN office to apply for SSN , they insisted that i need to have either i-766 or i-688B .
Could anyone give me some info on i-766 / i-688b ..or faced with similar problem?

thanks
Ravi
