ssa update before US Passport application ?

do i need to update SSA before passport application....

No. I think SSN update is not an urgent matter so you delay it indefinitely until it becomes real convinient. This assume, of fourse,
you have updated your SSN when you get the GC so that your current SSN card does not have work restriction legend on it
(it is also possible your SSN hasd nosuch legend even before GC).

If your SSN card has work restriction legend, then it becomes a little bit urgent but still not urgent enough to sacrifice
yoru other bussiness and affairs by making a SSA office trip.

Thanks WBH. No restrictions on SSN card...I was wondering if Dept of State cares about it and checks SSN database....when we apply for US passport....

Never heard if anyone has had this issue.

For nat citizen, both passport and SSA record should coem from USCIS so they should check with each other. More likely maybe SSA can check with DOS if you use passport to update your SSN
but not vice versa.

Note that you need to send your naturalization certificate to apply for passport and you need to original to update your SSN. So you cannot change it till you get the passport/NC back.

Also SSA is a real PITA - takes around an hour in wait time for a 5 minute change. they don't have a separate window for people wanting to just change their status (takes 5 min or less on avg) and people seeking SS benefits (avg of 30 min, one guy hogged a window for entire 70 min that i was there). so depending on the rush, you are in for the most boring time of your life. My advice for SSA is to avoid lunch times and possibly do it first thing in the morning.

No. I would suggest to apply for passport first. When you get your passport, go with it to SSA office to update your citizenship status.
