SS Card Update

I just want to know whether I can update (duplicate: no change of name and number) my social security card with I-551 stamp in my passport or Do I need to wait till I get my plastic card. What are the other documents I need to carry for SS Card update. I appreciate any input.

I went today to the local SS office with my GC, passport, and the current SS card. It took 5 minutes after a short wait and they said that the card will be mailed within 2 weeks. I've heard that the I-551 stamp will work because that should have the Alien Number.

There is no need to take the old card with you. In fact, that may be bad, since they would like to take it back, and then you don't have one until you get the new one.

JoeF,

I did not take the old card and the person @ SSA refused to entertain the application! So I'd went home to get the old one and then apply. They gave a receipt that acts as proof that your SS card is under processing.

Oh, interesting. They got smart...
I would say that I have misplaced it...
As far as I know, there is no requirement to hand in the old card.
Well, that doesn't necessarily help. I have heard about cases where it took several months for the new social security card to show up, and that caused considerable hardship. When you have to present the social security card, a receipt does not help.

Is lying to SSA a crime?

I would not hurry to upgrade my SS card but wait
for one year for USCIS to complete their updating
immigration record first so that SSA can verify.

If everything is there, getting a new SS card should
not take such lonmg time because citizen would
get mad. If we do things together with citizens,
we can get benefit of piggybacking

When I showed them the actual card and the old SS card, they just looked at it and gave it back. I got the new one in 1 week. This was back in 02.

What purpose does the SS card serve?

Folks,

Pardon my ignorance. How does it matter if I don't have an SS card for a few days? Why should I get the status on the SS card updated? What is the significance of the SS card?

The reason I ask these questions is because in the 8 years I've been in this country, I've never had to show my SS card except once when I applied for my Driver's lincense.

Thanks for any inputs.

PS: I've been a permanent resident since Nov, 2003

(1) There may be difference in SS benefits immigrants are eligible
from nonimmigrants so it is useful to let SSA to know you are
a PR now (You should again inform SSA and get a NEW SS card
after you become a citizen for teh same reason)

(2) You may need SS card for work eligibility sometimes in case
that you lose your green card. This means you should have a
no-legend card.

Hmmm....strange. Yes, I'm working (nowhere close to retirement :( ). And yes, I have updated my I-9 several times. My status changed from F1 - EAD - H1 - Green Card. My HR rep (>70,000 employees in the company with many foreign nationals) only asked for my EAD and passport when I joined.

Though SS card plus a driver license can be used to establish
work eligibility, it is not required if you have other documents.
HR can ask you to tell them your SSN but they don't have
to see your card. The number is for tax purpose.

Still a SSN card without "Valid only with INS permit" etc
is useful at sometimes.

Well, an EAD establishes employment eligibility. But, on H1, you don't have an EAD, so the social security card would be required to establish employment eligibility (list C in the lists of acceptable documents for the I-9.)

I don't think so. while on H1B, your SS card is supposed
to have a stamp :"Work only with INS authorizetion".
So cuch card can not be used to establish em,ployment
eligibility.

A passport with a working visa is good enough for
work eligibility

It is of course not enough.
The I-9 instructions have the lists:
"LIST C
Documents that Establish
Employment Eligibility
1. U.S. social security card issued
by the Social Security
Administration (other than a card
stating it is not valid for
employment)"

It is also possible to use a passport with the I-94 to establish employment eligibility (that's in list A.)

That is why it is reasosnable the previosu poster said he never
used SS card except for driver license application. He could not use
it even if he wanted. His SS card had that restriction.

Since one Doc from List B (Driver license ) and One Doc from List C are sufficient for work eligibility, the SS card mentioned in List C
must be a SS card without "Not valid with INS permit","Work with
INS authorizeation" etc.

There are too many loopholes in these list

SOCIAL SECURITY CARD ISSUES
The Social Security Administration (SSA) currently issues SSA numbers and cards to aliens only if they can present documentation of current employment authorization in the U.S. Aliens such as lawful permanent residents, refugees, and asylees are issued unrestricted SSA cards that are undistinguishable from those issued to U.S. citizens.

Note on restricted SSA and other cards:

SSA 揤alid only with INS (or DHS) Authorization?card ?issued to aliens who present proof of temporary work authorization; these cards do not satisfy the Form I-9 requirements.

SSA 揘ot Valid for Employment?card ?issued to aliens who have a valid non-work reason for needing a social security number (e.g., federal benefits, State public assistance benefits), but are not authorized to work in the U.S.

Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Individual Taxpayer Identification Numbers (ITINs) ?issued to aliens dealing with tax issues (e.g., reporting unearned income such as savings account interest, investment income, royalties, scholarships, etc.). An Individual Taxpayer Identification Number card is NOT employment eligibility verification.

Aliens who satisfy I-9 requirements have been known to present a restricted SSA card for payroll administration purposes (consistent with advice from SSA and IRS). In cases like this, the employer needs to encourage the individual to report the change in status to SSA immediately.

All you need is to take your GC to a SSA office, fill
in a form I remember called SS-5

Check http://www.ssa.gov out. They even have a SSA office locator
there by which you can locate the cloest office

Today I received my SSN card which I requested to remove the VALID WITH INS AUT....but to my surprise I got new card with new number ? So what should I do ?

Thanks

Thanks joef, that's what is running in my head now. But just now I was browsing the SSA site and it was stated that "Sequential SSNs assigned to members of the same family" can be one of the clause for new number but for integrity reasons, we cross-refer in our records all the numbers assigned to the same individual.

Should I still get clarified by the supervisor ?

I understand that I should get clarified but just for knowledge what are the risk involved in it if I don't do ?

Thanks

what next?

Folks,

I just got my passport stamped with the temporary green card stamp (valid for 1 year). I heard that we should get our ssn cards updated. Apart from that is there anything else that we need to do? Please advice.
